Devolver Digital is one of the few video game developers that I enjoy supporting because I believe that they take risks, especially when compared to the homogenized catalogs of other video game developers. Even if only stylistically, games like APE OUT look and sound like one of those games you want to try out of morbid curiosity, if not out of appreciation of well executed visual and sound design. Also having “killer” gameplay is then icing on the cake.
APE OUT feels good to play and it’s pretty straight forward, but there’s still enough of a challenge for the game to avoid being written off as too easy. If anything the gameplay is handled in such a way that I see potential for the gameplay to be further developed and evolve into something more.
The art style and sound design are the stars of the show, and make for an fun and aesthetically pleasing albeit gory experience. At the end of the day I can see this game gaining a cult niche following with speed runners, and maybe even modders.
